Olympians aren't the only ones who can get up close and personal with the Winter Games medals. Thanks to the Canadian mint in downtown Vancouver, medalheads can hold the gold, silver and bronze Olympic and Paralympic medals through Sunday when the Games draw to a close. White cotton gloves must be worn before visitors are allowed to touch the medals -- no fingerprints allowed. Even though the medals have ribbons attached, there's no trying them on -- that privilege is reserved for Olympians only. Still, the medals have been a big draw -- as many as 7,000 visitors per day with up to a seven-hour wait just to touch the hardware. "We'll stand as long as it takes," one Vancouverite, who was waiting with his two young sons, told the AP.
Snowboard racers ride a long, flat Alpine board equipped with plate bindings and hard, plastic boots similar to an Alpine ski boot. Austria's Siegfried Grabner, who won a bronze medal at the 2006 Turin Games, and Benjamin Karl are two medal favorites to watch today. Canada's Jasey Jay Anderson is the 2005 and 2009 world champion. Tyler Jewell (11th in Turin) and Chris Klug, the only American to earn an Olympic medal (bronze, 2002) in this event, make up the U.S. contingent.
The men's snowboarding parallel giant slalom today bears little resemblance to its halfpipe and snowcross cousins. The races, which feature red and blue gates much like an Alpine skiing giant slalom, pit two parallel racers against each other in timed races in a two-heat, knockout bracket format. The equipment each racer uses is vastly different than the halfpipe tricksters.
